A personality conflict with Bill Kenny causes Deek Watson to quit the Ink Spots in late 1944 and form his own group, called the Brown Dots. This was the first of many spin-off groups to follow. The Brown Dots recorded on the Manor label and had a fairly successful string of hits.

By the fall of 1945, Joe King had left the Brown Dots and was replaced, as high tenor lead, by Jimmie Nabbie.
